3 old houses with scrupulously smart interiors, original art, antique and modern furniture, terraces from which to admire the long views

Gather the whole family or a band of buddies and come in the summer to enjoy all three of these lovingly revamped houses - there's plenty of room for much sitting about or long convivial meals, but escapees can have their own quiet time either back at 'theirs' or in the vast gardens. In other months The Long House (built in 1738) is yours along with Petite Maison sometimes for overflow. All have books, are neat as a pin, cosy with underfloor heating, beautifully beamed and dressed in different colours - The Long House mainly in blues and reds. Cooks won't have any complaints about thoroughly well thought-out kitchens with enough pots and pans to whip up a storm and plenty of room for helpers. Sleep soundly in beds with good mattresses and proper blankets, wake to drink in the views from your terrace. There's a barn with a grand piano for formal events, a truly lovely garden and a big swimming pool so it's tempting to loaf here. But Cordes-sur-Ciel, Najac, Villefranche-de-Rouergue are great for days out and the whole valley is just made for outdoor pursuits like wild swimming, kayaking and walking.

Local points of interest from Simon Clark:

Local points of interest from
Simon Clark:

  • Arjac lies just inside the border of the Aveyron, just a couple of fields away from the Tarn et Garonne and just a few kilometres away from the Lot, so three very different departments to explore each with a wealth of beautiful towns, villages and views.
  • The hamlet sits at the top of a valley, in a forest of white oaks with wonderful views over the Causse and the Rouergue from the many walks which can be taken from here. It's a rambler's paradise and we provide a full set of IGN maps to keep you on track.
  • We are spoilt with the number of places to visit within an hour of Arjac. Our favourites are some of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, such as Najac, Belcastel, and Saint Cirq Lapopie as well as our fascinating local town, Villefranche de Rouergue (12kms)
  • Within an hour's drive are eight Grands Sites of the Midi-Pyrenees Region including Conques, Figeac, Rodez, Cordes sur Ciel, Albi, Rocamadour, as well as the more substantial towns of Cahors and Toulouse with plenty to explore and photograph.
  • The Aveyron is famous for the quality of its produce, particularly its cheeses, its duck and beef, its amazing food markets. We have some great restaurants within a short drive including several with Michelin stars, and others with fine riverside terraces.
  • Activities include kayaking down the Gorges de l'Aveyron from St Antonin Noble Val, cycling, off-road cycling, horse riding, river swimming, rambling, rock-climbing, donkey rides, and treetop adventure park
